Crayon – Competitor Analysis & Intelligence

Crayon – Competitor Analysis & Intelligence

Crayon is a competitor analysis platform offering some powerful competitive analysis tools with which to examine your competitor’s activities online.

Crayon competitor Analysis

Crayon Looks Great At First Sight but all is not what it seems

It’s powerful, has lots of features and I was quite excited to find it because, when you consider just how important it is to know what your competitors are up to, there are not many effective tools to help you to find out. I signed up for the free account and started to test it, excited about my new discovery.

My excitement, however, subsided quite quickly when I tried Crayon out with some of my live client site’s competitors. I tried one after another, some big, some small, not one of them registered on Crayon. Whether it’s just “.uk blindness” (common with US-based services), or not, I don’t know. All I know is that I couldn’t analyse sweet FA about any of them.

So, for the purpose of writing this introduction I used a few big sites that, surprise surprise, Crayon seemed to know plenty about – trouble is, so does everyone else and they don’t want to charge $100 per company per month, which Crayon does (although they do have a limited free account on offer).

Competitive analysis is a major part of any serious digital marketing strategy and there is a shortage of really good, affordable tools out there so I was keen to take a closer look at Crayon.

This is starting to look like a service that has been well designed and carefully thought out. The data it provides is exactly what businesses need to keep their noses in front of the opposition. A great idea let down by limitations in the implementation, as far as I can see. With a more comprehensive coverage of smaller yet still important sites this could really be a winner.

I wish I could use it but, like most small marketing agencies, my client list comprises of SME’s which, on my tests so far, seem to be flying below Crayon’s radar.

Nevertheless, I do suggest that you give it a try for yourself – you may have more luck than I did and operate in a sector that Crayon have noticed. Let me know how you get on.

Crayon Pricing

As I said before, there is a free acount that you can use to test it out and I suggest that you do that – it might be right up your street. If it is, however, and you decide to install it into your business you’ll find the costs start to ramp up – it’s a $100 per competitor per month which could soon start to rack up if you are in a competitive industry.

They also want to bill you up-front annually so get ready for a hefty bill if you jump onboard – which also costs you an addition $50 “setup” fee.

SE Ranking – Affordable SEO Tools Platform

SE Ranking is a full-featured SEO tools platform that is offered at several user levels, and at very reasonable monthly rates.

A combination which will make it accessible and affordable for even the smallest SEO operator or agency as well as for in-house use by small or startup businesses.

All the usual suspects are there of course, including; Rank Tracking, Site Audit. Backlink Tracking, and so on. However, to simply pigeon hole SE Ranking along with all the other similar services at this kind of price level would be to miss what is, in my opinion, one of it’s best features, this being its social media management function – not often seen at this price level.

SE Ranking also has very detailed competitor analysis, essential if you are serious about raising your online visibility and competing seriously in your marketing landscape.

Another feature you won’t often see in packages at this level – the Marketing Plan Feature.

I love this. Whoever though of including a feature like this in an integrated SEO platform was truly inspired – it’s exactly what  small businesses and small marketing agencies need – although the former might find it a bit overwhelming, such is the level fo detail it offers. Maybe this is an ideal service for small SEO specialists and digital marketing agencies to offer to their clients, and potential clients as part of their onboarding process.

Presentation is often an issue with all-in-one platforms like this with data being shown in a non-helpful way. None of that with SE Ranking – everything is presented clearly and concisely using easy to read dashboards and user-definable reports.

The  SE Ranking Report Writer is powerful and flexible, allowing users to produce reports by dragging “widgets” onto the report area. so, you want a report with your keyword rankings – just drag that widget over. Need competitor info too, no problem, just drag that widget. Pretty soon you’ll have a report to meet you, or your client’s, requirements and you can export it as a ready to view .pdf or export it as a spreadsheet for further analysis.

Whether you are incharge of SEO and/or digital marketing in your business or perhaps you are a marleting agency or consultant, this is a platform well worth considering. There is a free trial, 14 days with no credit card required, so be sure to give it a trial run. If you decide that you like what you see then you can climb aboard for as little as £4/month, billed annually.

There’s a lot more I want to tell you about this platform but, at the time of writing, I’ve only just started to explore it in depth myself so I will produce a full review when I’ve learned a bit more – in the meantime, take the free trial, you’ve really nothing to lose.

Adbeat – Competitive Ad Analysis

Adbeat is a market leading competitive ad analysis platform. It enables you to instantly uncover any advertiser’s online strategy.

It is a very valuable facility to have at your disposal, the ability to see your competitors ads, learn what’s working for them and to leverage their results to spend smarter on your own campaigns.

There are a number of tools that enable you to do some of this, most notably Hootsuite’s AdEspresso for Facebook ads and Spyfu and Ispionage for Google AdWords but none of them offer anywhere near the level of coverage offered by Adbeat. This is a tool for serious competitor analysis and it comes with a price tag that reflects that. If you need it, it is worth every penny, but the entry-level of $249/month will put it out of reach of many businesses.

Adbeat covers all important display networks. New networks are added regularly. They also have coverage for Direct Buys (ad placements purchased directly from publisher sites that bypass networks and exchanges). It enables you to effortlessly see your competitor’s marketing strategy, discover those high-performing publishers & placements and identify their best converting ad copy, landing pages, and sales funnels. Dynamite!

With Adbeat it is possible to easily identify other advertisers that are relevant to your industry and see their exact ad creatives, landing pages, and overall strategy, thereby enabling you to tailor your own strategy accordingly.

The list of ad publishing platforms covered by Adbeat is along one and it includes all of those that you would expect to be there, including, of course, Google, Bing, Yahoo and AOL. It’s real strength, however, lies in the massive database of other publishers for whom Adbeat provides ad-monitoring coverage. You can find the full list on their pricing page, here.

Adbeat competitive ad analysis

In the right hands this is a hugely powerful marketing weapon. Adbeat ensures that you are aware of your competitors ad strategy as it unfolds, notifying you of changes almost as they happen, enabling you to respond accordingly. Professional marketers and agencies will love it, even if they are not so fond of the price. It does a lot so it is fair, of course, that it should cost a lot but it is probably out of reach for many smaller businesses.

There’s no mention of a free trial period I’m afraid, so I haven’t been able to do a full review as yet, but you can request a demo and I’d recommend that you do just that in order to find out whether Adbeat is for you.

SERPed – All In One SEO Tools Platform

SERPed is one of the most comprehensive SEO & digital Marketing platforms out there with over 40 tools to help with SEO, Backlink Management, Keyword Research and a lot more.

SERPed SEO Tools

As you can see from the screenshot above, the SERPed range of SEO tools covers most of the things that a small SEO agency or in-house marketer would need to do on a daily basis as well as those things which only crop up from time-to-time.

I used the SERPed platform for a few months to manage a number of sites for a client and found it to be more than up to the job. There were a few cases where I felt the need to use external packages, backlinks being one of them and I run an account with Majestic for that purpose, but other than that I was more than satisfied with the SERPed offerings.

SERPed number some 44 tools on their platform and I must confess that I did not use them all but those that I did use performed accurately and served my purposes well. I particularly liked the competion Analyzer and Rank Tracker tools and used them on a daily basis. Others, such as the Site Auditor tool I used less often but with no less satisfaction.

Serious SEO operators who run PBNs, (Private blog Networks), will no doubt find the various Domain Finding tools included in SERPed to be of great benefit and content marketers will also appreciate the various content curation and copy spinning options as well.

I suppose if I was being picky I’d have to point to the lack of a proper Social Media tool. Its good to monitor your own performance on social media, and that of your competitors. For that reason I kept up with my RivalIQ subscription.

The only serious competitor for SERPed, in my opinion, is SEMrush who have a very good social media tool included and, with a similar entry price level, that could swing it in their favour for some users.

OK, so we can all agree that SERPed is a well thought out and comprehensive package with more tools than a Black & Decker catalogue but is it good value? Unusually these days they don’t have a free trial so you would have to pay for at least one months subscription in order to find out if it’s the right choice for you – the entry level account kicks in at a fairly hefty $79/month which is a lot for a small operator.

What I would say however is that if you had SERPed you wouldn’t need much else and, viewed that way I’d have to say it’s pretty good value.

Alexa – Web Analytics With The Power Of Amazon

Alexa has been around for a while and is well-known for its web traffic and analytics platform that enables digital marketers to find useful data about their own site, or their competitors site and how they are performing.

When you are putting together your digital marketing strategy you are going to need services like those offered by Alexa. The problem is, there are so many to choose from and why would you choose one and not another?

If it’s a long and well-established pedigree you’re after, then Alexa certainly fits the bill. Originally formed in 1996 and acquired by Amazon in 1999, Alexa has both the experience and the financial clout to do a great job of what it does. So what’s included in the Alexa box? Let’s take a look.

Alexa SEO & Competitor Analysis tools

You would expect there to be keyword research and site audit tools in a suite like this, and there are, but where Alexa really scores is in its competitor analysis and traffic comparison capability. You can select one or more, (up to 10 at a time) websites and see which keywords are driving traffic to them and how much traffic they drive, i.e. you can harvest your competitor’s most valuable keywords – and that’s just the beginning!

If you are really serious about building campaigns that are accurately focused on placing you above your competitors in search results then Alexa is the tool for you.

Another gem that Alexa is known for is its Site Ranking Metrics – every website is, (eventually) assigned an Alexa rank which is used by many as a substitute for Google’s now defunct, (or at least, no longer updated publicly), PageRank metric. You can get a global rank and a local, (country) rank for most sites although new sites do take a while to get indexed.

All-in-all, Alexa is a top quality tool that gives reliable, if not totally accurate, results and has to be on the shortlist of any professional SEO pratitioner or in-house marketing team. All of that, plus the sheer clout that Alexa has by virtue or being owned, and funded, by Amazon, makes it a safe choice, as well as a wise one.

Price wise, Alexa isn’t cheap. Yes they do have an entry level account at $9.99/month but it doesn’t really get you very much. If you want access to all of the tools mentioned above then it’s going to be $149/month.

They do say, “you get what you pay for” and in this case they’re absolutely right. Alexa is a top quality set of tools for marketing professionals or site owners who take their online presence seriously. There’s a 7 day free trial so why not give it a test drive – I guarantee that you want want to take it back to the showroom afterwards!

You may also be interested to know that Alexa offers a free browser extension giving access to some of its features directly from your browser. You can find out more here.
